The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi over his recent remarks that he could not afford medication for his late mother.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC described the former Rivers State governor as having depended heavily on public office for decades and said he appeared unable to sustain himself three years after leaving government.
The party offered condolences on the death of Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi while questioning Amaechi’s account of his financial situation. It listed his previous roles (two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor, two-term Minister of Transportation, and former presidential aspirant) and said his latest comments raised questions about his suitability for higher office.

According to the statement:
“The All Progressives Congress prays that the soul of Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi continues to rest in perfect peace. Amen.
“We also pray for excellent health of mind and body for her son, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi… who could not afford medications for his mother’s treatment.
“It is our sincere wish that employers of labour in his hometown of Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State may find him suitable for a job that pays wages sufficient for him to feed and buy medications for himself and his beloved family for the rest of his retirement. Amen.”
The APC further stated that Amaechi had “freeloaded at the highest levels of public office” for four decades and, after only three years out of office, claimed he was unable to support himself and his family. The party described this as evidence that he was unsuited for the vice-presidency and added that “the presidency is not a soup kitchen.”
Amaechi made the original comments while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday. He blamed President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies for widespread hardship and said the situation made it difficult for him to afford medication for his mother, who died after a prolonged illness at the age of 89.
The exchange is the latest in a series of sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the ADC ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
