The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for all teachers in the state to mark World Teachers’ Day.

According to a circular issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, the day off is intended to allow teachers to take part in commemorative activities. A statement from the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, issued in Ibadan, explained that the decision reflects the administration’s focus on the welfare, dignity, and professional development of teachers.

The statement described teachers as the backbone of the state’s education system and key contributors to human capital development. The work-free day is meant to give educators time to celebrate their role, review progress in the sector, and build stronger ties within the teaching community.

The government congratulated teachers on the occasion and restated its commitment to policies that support teaching and learning across Oyo State.

World Teachers’ Day is observed internationally every year on October 5. It was established by UNESCO in 1994 to commemorate the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers and to highlight the importance of educators worldwide. In Nigeria, several state governments often mark the day with special recognitions or work-free arrangements for teachers.

Similar declarations have been made in Kwara and Ekiti States for Monday, October 5, 2026. In those states, the announcements also aim to let teachers fully participate in World Teachers’ Day events. In Ekiti, day students have been directed to stay home, and parents and school authorities have been advised to make necessary arrangements.

For schools and families in Oyo State, the work-free day means teachers will not report for duty on Monday. Parents and guardians of day students should plan accordingly, as regular classroom activities are not expected to hold.

The gesture underscores ongoing recognition of teachers’ contributions amid the challenges of the education sector. It also provides an opportunity for reflection on professional development and the role of educators in shaping future generations.
