Ekiti and Kwara Declare Monday Work-Free for Teachers to Mark World Teacher’s Day 2026

Biodun Oyebanji

Teachers in Ekiti State will enjoy a work-free day on Monday, October 5, 2026, so they can fully take part in activities marking World Teachers’ Day. The announcement came from the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Adebimpe (also reported as Olabimpe) Aderiye, in a statement released on Saturday.

According to the commissioner, the decision allows teachers across the state to join colleagues and education stakeholders in celebrating the annual event. All day students in the affected schools are expected to remain at home. Parents, guardians, school authorities, and students have been advised to note the arrangement and make necessary plans.

Aderiye used the opportunity to thank teachers for their steady contributions to education and the development of children in Ekiti. She highlighted their dedication and the important role they play in shaping the state’s future.

World Teachers’ Day is observed every year on October 5. It was established by UNESCO in 1994 to recognise the work of teachers and to draw attention to the support they need. In many parts of Nigeria, state governments mark the occasion by granting teachers a free day so they can participate in special programmes, reflections, and celebrations without the pressure of regular school duties. A similar step has been taken in Kwara State.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across Kwara. The declaration was contained in a statement issued by his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola. The governor extended best wishes to teachers, praised their resilience and contributions to human capital development, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

What this means for parents and students

If you have children in public day schools in Ekiti (or Kwara where the parallel declaration applies), schools will not hold normal classes on Monday.

This is a good time to:

•  Plan alternative childcare or educational activities at home.

•  Encourage children to write a short note or draw something appreciating their teachers.

•  Discuss the value of teaching as a profession and how it shapes communities.

Private schools may follow different arrangements, so it is wise to check directly with individual institutions.

Why the gesture matters

Teachers often work under challenging conditions yet remain central to education outcomes. A dedicated free day signals official recognition and gives space for professional gatherings and reflection. It also reminds the wider public that quality teaching underpins progress in every other sector.

Many states periodically issue similar declarations around World Teacher’s Day. The 2026 observances in Ekiti and Kwara continue that pattern and arrive at a time when conversations about teacher welfare, training, and motivation remain important across Nigeria.

Happy World Teacher’s Day to all educators. Your daily efforts continue to shape the next generation.
