The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has stated that Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is fully aware that the party’s bid to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 general election will not succeed.
Onanuga made the remark in response to earlier comments by Amaechi. Before joining the Atiku Abubakar ticket, Amaechi appeared on Trust TV and argued that Atiku is “not electable.” He pointed out that while Atiku has a long history of winning party primaries dating back to 1992, those internal victories have never translated into success in a presidential general election.
Amaechi stressed that winning a party ticket is different from winning a national election and expressed the hope that Atiku would fail to secure a primary for the first time.
Reacting to the video on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Onanuga wrote:
“Rotimi Amaechi on Trust TV: ‘Atiku is not electable’.

The former minister and former governor knows this as fact, so he also knows their joint ticket is a joke and that their mission to beat President Tinubu in January would fail.”
The comment underscores the ongoing political exchanges as opposition parties begin positioning for the next presidential race.
In a separate development, Amaechi has also clarified his exit from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The former Minister of Transportation revealed that he “technically resigned” before the end of the administration.
Speaking during an interview on AIT, Amaechi explained that he sought and received Buhari’s approval to enrol in a university programme. As a result, he reduced his physical presence at the ministry and reported to the office only once a week while focusing on his studies.
These statements come at a time when Nigerian politics is already looking ahead to 2027, with various opposition figures testing public opinion and alliances.
Political observers note that early public exchanges between the ruling party and opposition candidates often set the tone for the campaign season. Whether Amaechi’s past assessment of Atiku’s electability will affect the ADC’s messaging remains to be seen as the political landscape continues to evolve.
