Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, has stated that President Bola Tinubu is unlikely to manipulate the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Amaechi argued that widespread public frustration over economic conditions would make such an action highly risky for the country.
According to Amaechi, Nigerians are currently facing significant hardship, including hunger and fatigue with the economic situation. He said: “Tinubu will not rig this election because there may not be a Nigeria if he rigs this election. Why? Because the people are tired; they are hungry. The President can help them by giving them food.”
Amaechi also questioned the use of funds generated from the removal of the fuel subsidy, asking: “Where are the funds from the removal of subsidy? Where is the money? We want to feel it.”
He emphasised that his comments were not driven by personal animosity, adding: “Nobody hates Tinubu, I love Tinubu; he knows.”

The former Minister of Transportation and Rivers State governor further addressed comments from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Amaechi said he would not engage in a direct response, citing cultural respect. He noted that he was still in secondary school when Onanuga began working at Newswatch magazine and that, in his tradition, he would refer to Onanuga as “Dede” (an elder). He criticised what he described as a lack of self-respect in public commentary by some older figures.
Amaechi’s remarks come as the ADC, with Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate, positions itself as an opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. The comments reflect ongoing debates about economic performance, the impact of subsidy removal, and the integrity of future elections in Nigeria.
These statements represent Amaechi’s personal assessment during the television interview and should be understood as political commentary rather than proven claims about any planned electoral interference.
