Lagos State University (LASU) has emerged as the highest-ranked Nigerian university in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The institution placed 493rd globally among 2,016 universities assessed across 110 countries and retained its position as the leading university in West Africa for the fifth consecutive year.
LASU achieved an overall score of 7,045 points. This marks a substantial improvement from its 760th position in the 2025 ranking (a gain of 267 places in one year) and continues a multi-year climb from 799th in 2024.
The 17th edition of the ranking, announced at a results ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan, is described by organisers as the largest global university ranking focused specifically on institutional sustainability performance. The 2026 theme—“Advancing Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance”—highlights how universities embed sustainability into governance, digital systems, and overall campus operations.
Unlike conventional university rankings that emphasise academic reputation, research output, or graduate outcomes, UI GreenMetric evaluates practical sustainability performance. Key assessment areas typically include Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education and Research, and Governance and Digitalisation.

Why this ranking matters
UI GreenMetric has grown into a widely referenced benchmark for universities working to improve environmental and sustainability practices. Strong performance can support institutional visibility, attract partnerships, inform campus planning, and demonstrate commitment to sustainable development goals. For students and stakeholders, it offers a different lens on university quality—one focused on how campuses manage resources, reduce environmental impact, and integrate sustainability into operations and education.
LASU’s result arrives as the university begins a new five-year administration under Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Badejo. Her priorities have been reported to include infrastructure and digital transformation, research and global visibility, academic excellence, and financial sustainability. The sustainability ranking provides an additional marker of institutional progress in these areas.
Organisers have indicated the 2026 edition aims to encourage broader global participation and collective efforts toward more sustainable campuses.
