The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal. A total of 804,948 candidates — representing 58.67% of those who sat the exams — obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
This marks a slight drop of 2.64 percentage points from the 60.26% recorded in 2025, when 818,492 candidates met the same benchmark.
NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. The results came 63 days after the last paper was written. The examination itself ran from 15 June to 23 July 2026.
Out of 1,378,048 candidates who registered, 1,371,992 eventually sat for the exams. Of these, 1,162,118 candidates (84.70%) achieved five credits and above, irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.

Sharp Drop in Examination Malpractice
One of the most positive highlights was the significant reduction in malpractice cases. Only 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of examination malpractice in 2026, compared with 3,878 in 2025 — a decline of 64.74%.
Prof. Wushishi attributed the improvement to strengthened monitoring measures introduced by the council. He also commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their support in maintaining discipline and protecting the integrity of the process.
Inclusion of Candidates with Special Needs
A total of 1,334 candidates with special needs participated. This group included students with hearing and visual impairments, albinism, autism, low vision, and other conditions. NECO continues to make provisions to ensure inclusive access to the examination.

What This Means for Candidates and Stakeholders
The 58.67% success rate in the core subjects of English and Mathematics remains the key threshold for many tertiary institution admissions in Nigeria.
While the slight decline from 2025 is notable, the sharp drop in malpractice cases points to improving examination integrity.
Prof. Wushishi expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his reappointment and to the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for continued support. He reaffirmed NECO’s commitment to upholding the credibility of its examinations.
Candidates, parents, and schools are encouraged to verify results promptly and use the official channels only. For the latest updates, visit the official NECO website.
