The Nigerian Army recently held a formal send-off ceremony for a group of discharged Master Warrant Officers at the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria. The event took place in the institution’s conference room and marked the end of active service for these senior non-commissioned officers who had served at the key training depot.

According to a statement shared by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Depot NA Zaria, Chikadibia Anele, on the Nigerian Army’s official X account, the ceremony was attended by the Commandant, Brigadier General Usman Ahmad, along with principal staff officers and heads of departments.

In his address, Brigadier General Ahmad encouraged the outgoing personnel to build strong, peaceful relationships with the communities where they settle after service. He stressed the importance of continuing to represent the Nigerian Army positively as ambassadors of the institution.

The Commandant also advised the discharged soldiers to stay engaged with the protection of civilians and to maintain their physical and mental fitness through hobbies and other activities now that daily military duties have ended. He conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, thanking the Master Warrant Officers for their dedicated service to the nation and wishing them success in the next phase of their lives.

Speaking for the group, the outgoing Regimental Sergeant Major of the Depot, Master Warrant Officer Joshua Agwaru, expressed gratitude for the Commandant’s mentorship and leadership. He assured the Army leadership that the discharged personnel remain ready to contribute in other capacities whenever called upon.

The ceremony featured words of advice from officers, the presentation of souvenirs and gifts by the Commandant, and group photographs to mark the occasion.

Why these send-offs matter

Master Warrant Officers occupy senior enlisted ranks and often serve as critical links between officers and junior soldiers. Their discharge ceremonies recognise long years of service, discipline, and institutional knowledge. Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria (commonly associated with Chindit Barracks) has long played a central role in recruit training and the development of Army personnel. Events like this highlight the Army’s emphasis on orderly transitions, welfare, and ongoing civil-military relations.

For many retiring service members in Nigeria, the shift to civilian life involves practical challenges—finding new livelihoods, maintaining fitness, and staying connected to community. The advice given at the ceremony—peaceful community integration, continued contribution to public safety in a civilian capacity, and personal wellness—reflects a broader institutional message about responsible transition.

Looking ahead

Such ceremonies form part of the Nigerian Army’s routine recognition of personnel completing their service under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff. They reinforce the values of loyalty, professionalism, and lifelong association with the force even after active duty ends.
