The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has issued a strong public warning against a fake recruitment notice currently circulating on social media and other online platforms. The fraudulent advert is being shared in the name of the now-defunct Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
In a public notice titled “Fraudulent Recruitment Notice” posted on its official X account on Monday, the NRS stated clearly that it has not authorised or started any recruitment exercise. The agency also confirmed that it has not appointed any individual, agent, consultant, or third party to handle recruitment on its behalf.
What the fake notice claims
The circulating document is titled something like “Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Job Vacancy, Replacement.” It promises job opportunities and directs applicants to send their personal details to an unofficial email address controlled by the scammers.

Official position of the NRS
The Nigeria Revenue Service said:
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the notice is fraudulent and did not emanate from the Nigeria Revenue Service.”
It further reminded the public that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been replaced by the Nigeria Revenue Service. Therefore, any recruitment announcement still using the old FIRS name should be treated with extreme caution and independently verified.
The agency stressed that genuine recruitment exercises will only be announced through its official website (nrs.gov.ng) and other authorised communication channels.
Important advice for job seekers
• Do not reply to the fake notice or click any links associated with it.
• Do not send personal information, certificates, identification documents, or payment of any kind.
• Never share your BVN, bank details, or one-time passwords in response to unsolicited job offers.
• Always verify recruitment information directly on the official NRS website or its verified social media accounts before taking any action.
Job scams that use the names of government agencies are common in Nigeria. Scammers exploit the high demand for employment by creating convincing-looking adverts, often requesting application fees or sensitive personal data.
How to stay safe
1. Check only official sources (nrs.gov.ng and the verified @NigeriaRevenue account).
2. Be suspicious of any recruitment advert that asks for money or directs you to personal email addresses.
3. Cross-check information with multiple reliable news sources or the agency’s official channels.
4. Report suspicious job offers to the appropriate authorities when possible.
The NRS continues to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and to ignore any unsolicited recruitment messages claiming to come from FIRS or NRS that do not appear on official platforms.
