President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Tuesday evening after a four-week working vacation spent mainly in France, following an initial stop in London.
The presidential aircraft landed at the Presidential Wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at approximately 6:22 p.m. local time. The President chose to arrive in Lagos rather than Abuja first.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu decided to fly into Lagos to honour the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. On Independence Day (October 1), the President is scheduled to attend the premiere of a movie dedicated to Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos.
While in Lagos, Tinubu is also expected to hold a series of strategic meetings with political leaders and associates over several days. These discussions form part of early preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. He will later return to Abuja.
Timeline of the trip
Tinubu departed Abuja on August 30. He spent about one week in London before travelling to Paris. The Presidency later extended the stay by several days.
During the period in Paris, the President attended a private dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron. He also held meetings with business leaders, including Vincent Bolloré of the Bolloré Group (whose interests span media and digital sectors such as Canal+, MultiChoice and Universal Music Group). On Monday, he met with Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Holdings.
In addition, last week Tinubu witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ogun State Government and DP World. The agreement covers plans for a Gateway deep seaport in Ogun Waterside and the development of a Blue Marine Economic Zone in the area.
The return coincides with activities marking Nigeria’s Independence anniversary and comes after an extended period of engagements abroad that the Presidency described as a working vacation combining rest with diplomatic and investment-related discussions.
This is a developing story. Further updates on the President’s schedule in Lagos and his return to Abuja will follow as official details become available.
