The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has released the names of 37 people who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
The individuals were among a larger group arrested during NSCDC operations targeting suspected illegal mining activities on 15 and 16 September 2026 near the Lt Gen Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate area in Minna, the state capital.
According to IHRC international peace ambassador Awaisu Giwa, the organisation obtained an initial list of names from records at General Hospital, Minna. A mortuary attendant provided the names on the instruction of the hospital’s chief medical director.

Four additional names were later added after relatives of the deceased contacted the commission.
Giwa stated that the list will be used to support efforts aimed at compensation for the families of those who died. He also noted that the commission planned to obtain an official version of the list on hospital letterhead.
The NSCDC had earlier reported that the deaths occurred in the early hours of 17 September and initially pointed to a suspected disease outbreak.
Other accounts, including statements from survivors and public officials, have raised questions about conditions in the detention facility, such as overcrowding. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago confirmed the death toll and said an investigation was underway.
Federal authorities subsequently suspended the state NSCDC commandant and a number of other officers, and established a panel to examine the incident.
