A mechanic known as Samson, who operated a workshop near Warike Estate in the Abijo area of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, has been reported killed after responding to a request to repair a vehicle.

According to information obtained by local media from a police source, the incident occurred on Tuesday, 15 September. Samson was contacted about repairing a Mercedes-Benz and went to the location where the car was said to be. He was later found to have been taken into a nearby bush area, where he was killed.

A police source stated that investigators are working to determine the full circumstances and identify those responsible. The same source indicated that suspected cult-related activity is being examined in connection with the case.

An anti-cultism advocacy group publicly linked the killing to earlier violence in the area, describing it as possible retaliation linked to a previous incident involving members of rival groups on 9 September near Adeba Bus Stop in Lakowe. The group claimed that a social media post revealing cult affiliation may have contributed to the targeting. These claims remain unverified by official sources and form part of the ongoing inquiries.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the family reported Samson missing. Detectives visited his residence and are attempting to track his mobile phone as part of efforts to locate him or establish what happened. The case remains under active investigation.

This incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Ibeju-Lekki and surrounding communities, where reports of cult-related violence have periodically surfaced. Mechanics and other informal workers who respond to call-out jobs can face elevated risks when traveling alone to unfamiliar locations, especially at night or in isolated areas.

Safety considerations for vehicle repair workers

•  Verify the identity and location of the person requesting the job before leaving your workshop.

•  Inform a trusted colleague or family member of the address and expected return time.

•  Prefer daytime appointments in populated or well-lit areas when possible.

•  Consider traveling with a colleague for unfamiliar call-outs.

•  Report any suspicious contacts or threats promptly to the nearest police station.

Authorities continue to urge residents to share useful information with the police. Anyone with details that could assist the investigation is encouraged to contact Lagos State Police Command through official channels.
