Nigeria’s Priorities at UNGA 81 as VP Shettima Leads Delegation to New York

Vice President Kashim Shettima Arrives New York For UNGA 81

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Nigeria for New York to represent President Bola Tinubu and lead the country’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

According to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), President Tinubu mandated Shettima to head the high-level team. The delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers, and other senior officials.

The General Debate of the 81st session is scheduled from 22 to 28 September 2026 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” This marks the third consecutive year Shettima has led Nigeria’s representation at the annual gathering.

Nigeria’s planned engagements

During the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement. The address will outline the country’s positions on issues affecting national development, peace and security, economic growth, and international cooperation.

Beyond the main speech, the Vice President is scheduled to take part in high-level meetings, including discussions linked to the Right to Development and climate action—areas of particular importance to Nigeria and the broader African continent. He is also expected to attend the traditional reception for heads of delegation and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, international organisations, and development partners on the sidelines.

Officials have indicated that Nigeria will use the platform to advance calls for reform of the international financial architecture, greater access to climate finance and technology, sustainable development priorities, and stronger African representation in global decision-making bodies.

Context on the 81st session

The UN General Assembly’s high-level week brings together leaders to address interconnected global challenges. The 81st session’s theme emphasises restoring trust in multilateral institutions and ensuring the United Nations better serves all member states amid rapid economic, demographic, and geopolitical shifts.

For Nigeria, consistent participation at this level underscores ongoing advocacy for a more representative and equitable global system—positions the current administration has highlighted in previous sessions.

Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his engagements in New York.

This report is based on the official statement released by the Office of the Vice President. Updates will be added as further details on arrival and specific meetings become available.
