United States Representative Riley Moore (R-West Virginia) has welcomed reports of the arrest of Mahmoud Adam in Plateau State, Nigeria. Moore described Adam as a radical Islamic Fulani terrorist leader allegedly responsible for attacks that killed Christians and linked the development to improved US-Nigeria security cooperation.
In a post on X on October 3, 2026, Moore wrote: “This is great news for Christians in Nigeria! The arrest of Mahmoud Adam, a radical Islamic Fulani terrorist leader responsible for the killings of countless Christians, is proof that the US-Nigeria Security Cooperation agreement is bearing fruit.
The Nigerian government deserves credit for making this arrest, and it’s clear that Congress and the Trump admin’s efforts to defend Christians are making a positive difference. We must keep pushing to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ!”
According to a report published by the US-based Daily Caller on October 2, Adam was arrested in the early hours of September 12 at his compound in Plateau State. The publication described him as a prominent Fulani community leader and cited sources, including a whistleblower and a former US intelligence officer, alleging links to the Fulani Ethnic Militia and violent attacks in the Middle Belt.

Nigerian journalist Masara Kim has also reported evidence connecting Adam to deadly attacks in the state.
The Daily Caller noted that this was not Adam’s first detention and alleged prior interventions involving Nigerian officials. The circumstances of the arrest, the specific charges (if any), and the status of the allegations remain subject to official confirmation by Nigerian authorities. No independent verification from Nigerian security agencies was immediately available at the time of publication.
Moore has been active on Nigeria-related issues. He previously led a congressional fact-finding visit, presented a report to the White House in February 2026 recommending stronger bilateral security cooperation and other measures to address violence against Christian communities, and has supported related legislative efforts.
Violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, including Plateau State, has affected communities of various backgrounds for years, with farmer-herder conflicts, banditry, and extremist groups contributing to insecurity. US attention to the issue has increased under the Trump administration, including Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern for religious freedom.
Moore called for continued cooperation between the United States and Nigeria to improve security for affected communities. Further details on Adam’s detention and any legal proceedings are expected from Nigerian officials.
