The Championship and Organising Bodies
The 2026 International Schools Debate Championship was coordinated by Vocara Institute and hosted by the QatarDebate Centre at Georgetown University in Doha. The QatarDebate Centre, established in 2008 by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, functions as Qatar’s national debating organisation and regularly organises high-level international programmes that bring together young debaters from across the world.
Participating teams came from countries including Jordan, India, Qatar, the Philippines, Kenya and others. The scale of the competition—more than 84 groups from eight nations—underscored its competitive intensity and the international standard against which the Nigerian students were measured.
Path to the Final
Team Nigeria, composed entirely of students from Abia State public schools, advanced steadily through the preliminary rounds. The contingent defeated or edged out competitors from the Philippines, Jordan, India and Qatar en route to the final. Their consistent performance across successive stages demonstrated strong preparation, critical thinking, teamwork and persuasive communication skills under pressure.
Major Awards and Recognitions
At the conclusion of the championship, the Nigerian team collected four major trophies:
• Best International School Debate Team (described as the biggest prize of the tournament)
• Overall Best Team in the Junior Category
• Best Leadership Award
• Best Debater Award
In addition, the students earned 12 further laurels recognising outstanding performances throughout the competition. These combined results established the Abia contingent as the overall champions of the 2026 edition.

Official Reaction and Broader Significance
Ukoha Njoku Ukoha attributed the success to the intellectual capacity of students in Abia’s public schools and the impact of ongoing education reforms in the state.
“This historic victory has once again demonstrated the strength of Abia’s new education model under His Excellency, Dr. Alex C. Otti and the intellectual capacity of students in Abia public schools,” he said. “The Abia Debate Team has made Abia and Nigeria proud.”
The result places students from Abia’s public schools at the centre of Nigeria’s strong showing at the international competition. It also adds to the state’s growing record of participation and success in academic contests beyond Nigeria’s borders. By competing successfully against peers from multiple countries and claiming the top team honour, the students have highlighted the potential of public-school education when supported by structured programmes, mentorship and opportunities for international exposure.
The victory serves as encouragement for other young Nigerians, particularly those in public schools, and reinforces the value of investing in debating, critical thinking, leadership development and global engagement as core components of quality education. As the students return home with their trophies and laurels, their achievement stands as a clear demonstration of excellence achieved on an international stage.
