Two men have been arrested by the Adamawa State Police Command for allegedly stealing irrigation equipment from a farm belonging to the late elder statesman Bamanga Tukur in Yola South Local Government Area.

The arrests were announced on Friday, less than a week after Bamanga Tukur’s death on 12 September 2026. Police said the suspects took eight underground irrigation water pipes valued at approximately ₦3 million from the farm.

According to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, the suspects are 45-year-old Ibrahim Mohammed of Wauro Jabbe and 28-year-old Jemilu Yahaya, described as a scavenger from Jambutu Bypass. Operatives attached to the Kofare Divisional Police Headquarters in Yola made the arrests based on credible intelligence.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Mohammed allegedly removed the pipes and sold them to Yahaya. Police recovered the stolen irrigation pipes along with one Carry-go motorcycle. The suspects remain in custody pending further investigation and are expected to be charged to court once inquiries are completed.

Bamanga Tukur, who died at the age of 90, was a prominent Nigerian figure. He previously served as Governor of the old Gongola State (which included present-day Adamawa), held the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, and had longstanding business and farming interests in the region. Farms relying on irrigation systems are important for dry-season agriculture in Adamawa, making the reported theft of such equipment particularly disruptive for farm operations.

The Adamawa State Police Command continues to urge members of the public to provide useful information that can help prevent and solve crimes. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through official channels.

This incident underscores the need for improved security around agricultural assets, especially in the period following the passing of notable community figures whose properties may become targets.
