Nigeria’s Falconets are out of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 quarter-final loss to Colombia on Sunday in Łódź, Poland.
The decisive goal came in the second minute of stoppage time when Valerin Loboa scored for Colombia, ending Nigeria’s campaign at the last-eight stage.
How the Match Unfolded
Nigeria controlled large parts of the first half and created the better chances. Janet Akekoromowei struck the crossbar in the 19th minute, while Colombia goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo made an important save to deny Tumininu Adeshina.
The game changed in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was sent off after a VAR review for a high challenge. Playing with ten players for the final stages made the task much harder. Colombia eventually took advantage deep into added time to secure their place in the semi-finals.
The Falconets had entered the quarter-finals in strong form after a convincing 3-0 victory over England in the round of 16, with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu. Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma also saved a penalty in that match.

Context and What It Means
This result ends Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. The Falconets remain two-time runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup and are still searching for their first title at this level.
The late nature of the defeat and the red card will naturally raise questions about game management and discipline in high-stakes matches. At the same time, reaching the quarter-finals and producing a strong performance against England showed clear progress under the current setup.
Colombia advance to the last four, where they will face either North Korea or Canada.
Looking Ahead
For the Falconets, the focus will now shift to rebuilding and preparing for future youth competitions and senior team pathways. Consistent performances at U-20 level remain important for the long-term development of Nigerian women’s football.
While the manner of the exit was painful, the team’s overall showing in Poland offered positives that can be built upon.
