Former Big Brother Naija housemate Cross Okonkwo has publicly alleged that he was robbed by a street beggar while driving in the Ikate area of Lekki, Lagos.

In a video shared on his social media page on Wednesday, Cross described how several people approached his vehicle while he was stuck in traffic. According to him, one of the individuals came close to his car window, reached in, and took an item before running off.

Cross said he immediately tried to chase the person but was unable to catch up because the individual fled quickly. He expressed frustration at the incident and questioned why people he described as beggars or street operators are allowed to move freely around the area, particularly near vehicles.

In his post, Cross stated:

“Federal government, I just got robbed. All these beggars, they were in my window talking to me. I did not refuse the guy and he just ripped off something from my car and ran away.

Nigeria is not safe. Federal government, what kind of mistake are you guys doing allowing these guys on the street? This Lagos, I don’t understand why you guys are allowing these people to be on the street. This is unfair.”

Reports of motorists encountering aggressive beggars, street urchins, or individuals who approach vehicles in traffic have surfaced periodically in parts of Lagos, including the Lekki-Epe corridor and surrounding areas such as Ikate. Some residents and drivers have previously complained about items being taken from cars or about feeling unsafe when people crowd vehicle windows during congestion. These remain individual accounts and allegations unless independently verified by authorities.

Cross’s video has drawn attention to ongoing public conversations about street-level security, the presence of people begging or loitering near busy roads, and the experiences of residents and motorists in commercial and residential parts of Lagos.

As with any personal account shared on social media, the details of this specific incident have not been independently confirmed by police at the time of writing. Cross has not publicly stated whether he has formally reported the matter to the authorities.

This incident adds to broader discussions many Lagos residents have about personal safety while navigating traffic in high-density areas.
