Rose Idibia, the mother of Nigerian music legend Innocent Idibia (better known as 2Baba or 2Face), has spoken out in defence of her son amid ongoing public scrutiny of his personal life. In a recent interview with Vanguard, she emphasised that many published reports and allegations about him are untrue and that his self-awareness has helped him endure the criticism.

The comments come after a turbulent period that began in early 2025. In January 2025, 2Baba publicly announced his separation from actress Annie Macaulay after more than a decade of marriage. Shortly afterwards, in February 2025, he made his relationship with Natasha Osawaru, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, public.

The developments triggered intense media coverage, social-media speculation, and a series of reported disagreements involving the singer and Osawaru.

Mrs Idibia acknowledged that the constant reports can take an emotional toll, but insisted that knowing the truth about himself has kept her son focused.

“What kept him (2Baba) going is that some of the things that have been published about him in the dailies and online are not true. If people are attacking you from every quarter, but you know yourself, it might hurt you, but because you know the truth, you can weather it. We know the truth about him. He’s my son. I know what he can do, and I know what he cannot do,” she said.

She went further, reflecting on the pressures that modern celebrities often face: “And you know, celebrities of these days, sometimes they don’t just stay and commit sin by themselves. People force them to do so. He has gone through a lot. Lies upon him—newspapers, social media—they come up with all sorts of rubbish. But I thank God because he’s somebody who knows what he wants. And he forged ahead and made it. He may not be super rich, but he made it in music.”

A Career Built on Resilience

2Baba’s journey offers important context for his mother’s remarks. Born Innocent Ujah Idibia in 1975, he rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a member of the group Plantashun Boiz before launching a highly successful solo career.

Hits such as “African Queen” helped define an era of Nigerian popular music and contributed to the global rise of Afrobeats. Over more than two decades he has collected major awards, built a substantial catalogue, and maintained a large fan base across Africa and the diaspora.

His mother has previously spoken about the family’s early hopes that he would pursue a conventional profession such as law, medicine or engineering. Instead he followed his passion for music—a decision that ultimately brought him widespread recognition even as it exposed him to the intense public scrutiny that accompanies fame.

Media Pressure and Celebrity Personal Lives

Mrs Idibia’s comments highlight a broader reality for high-profile figures in Nigeria and beyond: personal relationships quickly become public property. Coverage of separations, new partnerships, and alleged private disputes can generate relentless headlines and online commentary, some accurate and much of it speculative or exaggerated.

By stressing that she “knows what he can do and what he cannot do,” she positions herself as a grounded counterweight to the noise. Her remarks also touch on resilience—the ability to separate external narratives from personal truth—and the role of self-knowledge in weathering public storms.

While controversies surrounding personal matters continue to attract attention, 2Baba’s mother chose to focus on character, perseverance, and the genuine achievements of his music career. In an industry where reputation can shift quickly with each viral story, her defence underscores the lasting importance of family perspective and personal integrity.

For fans and observers, the interview serves as a reminder that behind the headlines is a long creative career and a family that has watched both the highs and the pressures of fame unfold.
