Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, recently shared a light-hearted Instagram video in which she playfully challenged fellow artiste Tiwa Savage to a physical fight. The comments came while Teni was discussing earnings in the Nigerian music industry and the high-cost lifestyles of some of her male colleagues.
In the video, Teni expressed frustration about industry pay and suggested that higher fees would allow artistes to afford luxury items. She then turned the conversation toward a mock challenge directed at Tiwa Savage, saying she would “beat you enter bush” and later apologise, while also referencing Tiwa’s son in a joking manner. Teni framed the remarks as part of a broader, humorous take on female artistes and industry dynamics.
Tiwa Savage responded briefly on social media with the message: “Pick a date.”
The exchange appears to be in the same playful spirit as earlier public banter between the two singers rather than a serious confrontation. Both artists have a history of entertaining fans with witty or competitive moments, including past onstage collaborations.
The discussion also touched on questions many fans and industry observers raise about how some male artistes fund expensive cars and lifestyles compared with reported performance fees. Teni’s comments highlighted the gap some female artistes feel exists in earnings and visibility.
In a separate but related entertainment note, comedian DeeOne publicly dared reality TV star Phyna to face other contestants in a fight after Phyna’s recent boxing-style challenge involving Nollywood personalities. These kinds of playful public challenges have become a recurring feature of Nigerian entertainment social media.
What this means for the industry
Playful rivalries and public banter often generate conversation and keep artists in the spotlight. At the same time, discussions about fair pay and gender dynamics in Afrobeats continue to surface among artistes and fans. Both Teni and Tiwa remain established voices in Nigerian music, known for their individual careers and occasional collaborative energy.
