Teacher’s Day 2026: FG Says Over 51,000 Teachers Trained, Academic Staff Pay Raised by 40%

Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa

The Federal Government has announced that more than 51,000 teachers have been trained as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the teaching profession and improve learning outcomes in Nigeria.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, in a message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day. In a separate message, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Said Ahmad, revealed that academic staff salaries have increased by 40 per cent under the current administration.

Dr Alausa described teachers as the backbone of Nigeria’s education system. He noted that their role goes far beyond classroom teaching to include inspiring students and preparing them for future opportunities.

“Teachers do far more than teach. They inspire confidence, nurture potential and open doors of opportunity for millions of Nigerian children every single day,” the minister said.

He explained that the government is prioritising teacher development and welfare under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Key initiatives highlighted include:

•  The Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF)

•  Revitalisation of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN)

•  Strengthening of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI)

•  The EduRevamp programme

“These efforts reflect our commitment to strengthening the teaching profession, expanding opportunities for teachers and building an education system that works for every Nigerian learner,” Alausa added.

The minister emphasised that the government remains focused on ensuring teachers are properly supported, empowered and equipped to deliver better results in the classroom.

In her own message, Dr Suwaiba Said Ahmad also confirmed that over 51,000 teachers have received training, while academic staff pay has risen by 40 per cent.

“Happy National Teachers’ Day to our dedicated teachers across Nigeria! Your patience and sacrifice are shaping the future of our nation,” she said.

She further noted that schools across the country are currently running on a stable academic calendar and assured teachers of continued government investment.

“We will keep investing in you, because you are the true builders of our future,” Ahmad stated.

Nigeria joined other countries around the world to commemorate World Teachers’ Day, an occasion set aside to recognise the vital contribution of teachers and to call for improved working conditions and professional development.

Dr Alausa concluded by expressing appreciation to teachers nationwide:

“To every teacher, in every classroom, in every community across our country: thank you. We see you, we value you, and we celebrate you.”
