Segun Sowunmi, Convener of The Alternative, has rejected recent claims that President Bola Tinubu is not in good health or of sound mind.
Speaking on Thursday at a town hall meeting in Ijebu North East Local Government Area of Ogun State, Sowunmi criticised what he described as a pattern among some Nigerians of celebrating negative news about the country. He described the tendency as a form of self-hate and called on citizens to reject hate speech and rumour-mongering.
According to reports, Sowunmi said it was unfortunate that certain individuals appear to take greater interest in setbacks than in progress and new investments coming into Nigeria.
“You cannot indulge in continuous self-hate to the extent that all you’re looking for is bad news. The president is in good health. The president is in sound mind,” he stated.
The comments came in response to speculation that President Tinubu’s absence from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for a third time was due to medical reasons and that this raised questions about his fitness to contest a future election.

Sowunmi argued that when the Vice President represents the President at such events, it carries the same weight as the President’s personal attendance. He noted that UNGA is largely an occasion where formal presence is recorded rather than a forum that requires the head of state’s constant physical participation.
He further questioned the wisdom of the President abandoning major economic opportunities — including a reported $700 billion gas investment and a $17 billion seaport project linked to Ogun State — simply to appear for photographs at the United Nations.
Sowunmi also accused some opposition figures, particularly certain presidential candidates, of consistently failing to acknowledge positive developments in the country while quickly celebrating any challenge that arises.
“You will never hear them, especially those so-called presidential candidates. They will never rejoice if anything good comes to Nigeria. By the time they hear there’s a small challenge, they’ll be rejoicing,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to ignore those who thrive on mischief and instead focus on unity and constructive engagement so that the country can attract development and strengthen its voice on the global stage.
Sowunmi reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu and for the Ogun East senatorial candidate, Governor Dapo Abiodun. He stressed that the district cannot afford to treat the forthcoming senatorial election lightly.
