Deacon Steve Eyo, the pastor in charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Glorious People Assembly in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has died after collapsing while preaching at a funeral service.
According to reports, including from Leadership, Eyo was delivering a sermon at the funeral of a female member of his church on Friday when he suddenly collapsed. He had been speaking about the certainty of death and the importance of living with the awareness that life can end at any moment.
The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m., roughly 15 minutes after he began preaching at about 1:10 p.m. Some mourners initially thought the collapse might have been part of his message, but it quickly became clear he was in medical distress. Ministers, choir members, and others present moved to assist him.
He was taken to a nearby medical facility in the ambulance that had been hired for the funeral. He was later confirmed dead at the hospital. No official medical cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
Residents of Aleto have described Eyo as a father figure, peacemaker, and cheerful man who was well known and respected in the community. Several people recalled that he supported residents, maintained close relationships, and played a positive role in community life.
His death has left members of the church and the wider community in shock and mourning.
