A female police inspector attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station in Lagos has died following a hit-and-run incident on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Inspector Mercy Bassey was on route-lining duty on Tuesday ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in the state when the incident occurred.

According to a security source who requested anonymity, she was struck by a black Toyota Highlander SUV at about 2:30 p.m. while crossing the bridge at the Adekunle Intersection heading toward Lagos Island.

The vehicle fled the scene. Police patrol officers on duty pursued it but were unable to stop the driver. The registration number of the SUV and the identity of the driver remain unknown at this time.

Bassey was rushed to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta for treatment. She later died while awaiting medical attention. Her body is to be transferred to a morgue in Yaba for preservation.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident. Spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi declined to provide further details, stating that the command did not wish to comment on the matter at the moment.

Police are working to obtain CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify the vehicle and the driver.

The incident took place amid heightened security arrangements for the President’s movement in Lagos. Tinubu arrived at the Presidential Wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, later that evening at 6:22 p.m. after returning from engagements in France and the United Kingdom.

Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
