Nigerian Troops Repel Night Assault on Garaha Forward Operating Base, Neutralise ISWAP Fighters in Adamawa — Latest Setback in a Persistent North-East Insurgency

Joint Task Force

Nigerian troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, successfully repelled a night-time assault by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on their Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Garaha, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, on the evening of October 12, 2026. The engagement left at least four terrorists dead, five soldiers wounded, and a significant cache of weapons and equipment recovered from the retreating attackers.

According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, a longstanding counter-insurgency analyst focused on the Lake Chad region, the insurgents advanced on foot from the Lar axis and struck the base at approximately 9:07 p.m. The number of attackers remains unconfirmed, but the troops mounted a rapid counter-offensive that forced the fighters to withdraw. Exploitation operations continue to determine the full extent of insurgent casualties. @zagazolamakama

Recovered items included one PKT machine gun, six AK-47 rifles, 11 AK-47 magazines, three PKT ammunition belts containing 67 rounds, 157 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one 60mm mortar bomb, an Infinix Android phone, a Canon portable video recorder, three camelback water bags, a magazine carrier, and assorted clothing. Military sources emphasised that troops remain on high alert, with follow-up operations underway to track fleeing elements and gather further intelligence.

This failed assault marks another costly probe of military positions in Sector 4 of Operation HADIN KAI’s area of responsibility. It also fits a troubling recent pattern around the same base. Just weeks earlier, between September 30 and October 1, 2026 — coinciding with Nigeria’s Independence Day commemorations — insurgents launched coordinated attacks on 232 Battalion in Garaha and 226 Battalion in nearby Garkida. Those engagements left three soldiers dead and others wounded, though troops ultimately repelled the attackers and later neutralised 16 terrorists in follow-up ambushes and an air strike in the Boima area of Gombi Local Government Area. Local accounts from that earlier incident described fighters approaching via the Lar axis, overrunning parts of the camp, looting weapons and an armoured vehicle, and setting structures ablaze before withdrawing. lucky-wap-ams.op-mobile.opera.com

Hong Local Government Area has emerged as a persistent flashpoint. Bordering Borno’s Askira-Uba corridor and sitting within striking distance of the Sambisa Forest, the area — particularly communities under the Hoba (Kilba) Chiefdom such as Garaha, Mubang, Zah, and Gaya-Dlang — has suffered repeated raids throughout 2026. Attacks have targeted both military outposts and civilian settlements, displacing farmers, burning homes and churches, and killing residents and security personnel. Local leaders, including successive Hong LGA chairmen, have repeatedly highlighted the vulnerability of farming communities and the strain on security architecture in this central senatorial zone of Adamawa.

The broader context: ISWAP’s resilience and Operation HADIN KAI’s campaign

Islamic State West Africa Province traces its origins to the 2016 split within Boko Haram (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, or JAS). Dissident commanders rejected the extreme takfirist tactics of Abubakar Shekau and aligned more closely with Islamic State’s central leadership. ISWAP established itself around the Lake Chad Basin, emphasising governance over pure destruction in some areas while remaining highly lethal against military targets and perceived collaborators. Despite heavy losses, the group has demonstrated adaptability — shifting between large multi-directional assaults on bases, hit-and-run raids, and attempts to expand logistics and influence beyond the traditional North-East.

In 2026, violence involving both ISWAP and residual Boko Haram factions has remained elevated. Data and analysis from conflict trackers have noted surges in clashes with Nigerian forces, occasional internal frictions within ISWAP, and reports of pragmatic coordination between certain JAS and ISWAP elements in specific locales. Concurrently, Nigerian troops under Operation HADIN KAI (the successor to earlier campaigns such as Lafiya Dole, renamed in 2021 to emphasise unity and cooperation) have recorded steady kinetic successes: air strikes eliminating dozens of fighters and commanders, ground ambushes, recovery of weapons and logistics, and the ongoing surrender or capture of fighters and collaborators. Theatre commanders have pointed to the return of displaced families, reopening of some markets and roads, and the restoration of civilian administration in previously abandoned communities as indicators of progress, even as asymmetric threats persist.

The Garaha incident underscores both the effectiveness of defensive postures at forward bases and the persistent challenge of denying insurgents freedom of movement in forested and border corridors. The recovery of a mortar bomb, machine gun, and recording devices suggests the attackers intended a serious, possibly documented assault rather than a mere harassment raid. The presence of communications and media equipment also aligns with ISWAP’s pattern of using recovered or smuggled technology for operational coordination and propaganda.

Analysis and outlook

Night assaults on isolated FOBs remain a preferred ISWAP tactic because they test troop readiness, seek to seize weapons and ammunition, and generate psychological impact. The swift and successful counter-response at Garaha on October 12 demonstrates improved situational awareness and firepower at this particular location compared with earlier, costlier engagements. However, the recurrence of attacks on the same axis within weeks indicates that the underlying sanctuary areas and supply routes have not been fully disrupted.

For communities in Hong and neighbouring LGAs, the human cost extends beyond military casualties. Repeated violence has disrupted farming seasons, forced internal displacement, and heightened inter-communal fears in an already complex security environment that also includes banditry and ethnic militia activity in parts of the broader North-East and North-Central regions.

Military sources stress that exploitation and mop-up operations continue. Broader Operation HADIN KAI efforts combine kinetic pressure with non-kinetic measures, including community engagement and efforts to encourage surrenders. Whether the latest setback for the insurgents translates into sustained degradation of their capacity in Adamawa will depend on follow-through — sealing escape routes, targeting logistics, and reinforcing vulnerable outposts while addressing the socio-economic grievances that insurgents exploit.

The October 12 engagement at Garaha is one more chapter in a long, grinding campaign. It illustrates both the resilience of Nigerian troops defending forward positions and the stubborn adaptability of ISWAP in probing for weaknesses along the fringes of the Lake Chad Basin conflict zone. Further details on casualties and recovered intelligence are expected as operations progress.
