Saka's one goal secures a blunt reality check after Villa Park showdown

Arsenal just started their Premier League title defense with two wins, narrowly defeating Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park. Match-winner Bukayo Saka stayed humble after the final whistle, highlighting the Gunners' strong defense while admitting they didn't even play their best on the ball.

Arsenal proved why they are reigning champions, grinding out a precise 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at a hostile Villa Park to remain perfect in their Premier League defense.

In what resembled a tactical chess match for Mikel Arteta’s 250th Premier League game as manager, the Gunners faced some tough early challenges.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal: Post-match analysis

Villa nearly scored first in the first half when Emiliano Buendia hit the crossbar, revealing some rare gaps in the Arsenal backline.

But true champions adapt. At halftime, Arteta made a key change, bringing on Eberechi Eze for Christos Tzolis in the 46th minute, injecting fresh energy into Arsenal’s attack.

The second half quickly became the Bukayo Saka show. In the 55th minute, referee Jarred Gillett awarded a penalty after Saka was fouled, but VAR review showed the contact was just outside the box.

Undeterred, Saka got his redemption four minutes later. In the 59th minute, he scored a beautiful goal following a precise Riccardo Calafiori cross, after a smooth build-up involving Eze and Cristhian Mosquera.

Villa pressed but couldn't find a breakthrough, ending the game without a single shot on target. New Arsenal signings Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa made their debuts off the bench to help secure their second straight clean sheet.

What Saka said

After the tough away win, Saka spoke frankly about the team’s strong defensive identity.

"One goal is normally enough for us as we are so solid at the back," Saka said, casually emphasizing Arsenal's excellent defense.

"Arteta did give us credit in the dressing room because we weren't at our best with the ball tonight, but without the ball, we were incredible. As soon as we lost it, we were running back because we know transition is where they are dangerous."

When asked about his personal goals for the 2026/27 season, the winger was guarded but made his elite mentality clear:

"I keep my targets to myself, but what I do know is that every week I want to be there and trying to decide the game. That is what I think I am on the team to do."
