Referees Who Awarded Haaland’s Goal in Manchester Derby Temporarily Suspended

Video Assistant Referee, VAR, Matt Donohue and Assistant VAR, Blake Antrobus, who managed the Manchester derby, will be taking a break from officiating in the next round of Premier League matches. This decision was made by Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb and the team at Sky Sports News. Donohue and Antrobus will not be officiating any games until at least after the international break.

Meanwhile, referee Michael Oliver, along with assistants Stuart Burt and Tim Wood, and fourth official Paul Tierney—the officials who also took part in the Manchester derby—have been assigned to upcoming matches.

The refereeing organization, Pro Ref, publicly acknowledged an error in awarding Manchester City’s goal during their 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The goal, scored by Erling Haaland, was initially awarded despite Enzo Fernandez of City being in an offside position when he tried to play the ball.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Pro Ref shared that they contacted Manchester United to recognize the mistake and admitted that the VAR should have suggested an on-field review for Haaland’s winning goal.
