Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday attended the inauguration of the campaign office of the Presidential Candidate of the Allied People's Movement (APM) Seyi Makinde, in Abuja and said his fellow opposition candidate is qualified to become Nigeria’s president.
During the event, Obi emphasized that political differences should not turn opposition members into enemies and called for post-election unity. "[We want] a Nigeria of unity and inclusion. We have a candidate contesting for president today: my dear brother Seyi Makinde. Is he qualified? Yes,” Obi affirmed. His presence at Makinde’s campaign office aimed to demonstrate that politicians can hold differing opinions without hostility.
"What we are doing today shows we are not desperate. We want Nigerians to freely choose," Obi stated. He urged support for whoever wins fair and transparent elections, emphasizing that all will work together to build a better Nigeria. Obi also urged leaders to focus on addressing ordinary Nigerians’ issues rather than engaging in political quarrels, advocating for politics that aim to uplift and eradicate poverty.
Makinde, the current governor of Oyo State, used the occasion to outline his “Reset Nigeria” agenda, urging transparency in resource management. He called for Nigeria’s crude oil to benefit its citizens directly and questioned why locally refined crude is priced at international rates. "If a community grows food, its people shouldn't pay as if it traveled halfway around the world," he said. Makinde also stressed the need for government openness about decision-making and resource allocation, insisting, "Nigerians must see how decisions are made and resources managed."
The event featured opposition figures, including Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed and APM vice-presidential candidate Lawal Daura. Mohammed praised Makinde as a significant Nigerian talent and warned opponents against underestimating the APM candidate. Obi’s appearance attracted attention due to the anticipation of a presidential rivalry with Makinde in 2027.
