In a dramatic escalation, Niger’s military government has accused France and several unnamed neighboring nations of backing last week’s unsuccessful coup attempt. The government warns that it may pursue international action against those it believes played a role.
The accusations arose after a tense mutiny on August 29, 2026, in Niamey, where renegade soldiers stormed a key military base and other vital sites before government forces eventually regained control.
Government spokesperson Soumana Boubacar delivered a defiant statement on national television, claiming the operation was fueled by foreign interests.
“This action, with its far-reaching international implications, was fomented and supported by a widespread network orchestrated by the French regime under Emmanuel Macron,” he declared.
He accused “traitorous and renegade elements" of being promised support to pursue "Macron's unfulfilled ambitions and those of his allies here at home."
Boubacar emphasized that such "destabilizing maneuvers will inevitably fail.”
Adding to the controversy, Niger also pointed fingers at unnamed African countries, claiming they acted as intermediaries in the alleged plot. Earlier, state television broadcast a video featuring an air force captain, named Benin, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Economic Community of West African States as supposed backers.
Both the listed countries and ECOWAS have vehemently denied any involvement, dismissing the accusations outright. France also rejected Niger’s claims, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemning the allegations as “pure fiction" and reaffirming that France has neither the desire nor the capacity to support such actions.
The mutiny marked the gravest internal crisis faced by General Abdourahamane Tiani’s military government since he seized power in 2023. Weakened by the turmoil, government forces—reportedly aided by Russia’s Africa Corps—managed to regain control.
These latest accusations have further strained Niger’s already tense relationship with France, with diplomatic ties between the two nations sharply deteriorating since the military coup.
