Manchester United were knocked out of the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) on Wednesday night after a dramatic collapse at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick’s side led 2-0 inside 10 minutes but ultimately lost 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion, exiting at the third-round stage.
Flying Start for United
The Red Devils began brightly. Academy product Shea Lacey marked his first senior start with a superb goal in the 8th minute, driving into the box and finishing calmly past Jason Steele at the near post. Moments later, Mason Mount doubled the lead, reacting quickest to slot home the rebound after Marcus Rashford’s effort was saved.
Old Trafford was buzzing and United looked in complete control.
Brighton Fight Back
Brighton grew into the contest and pulled a goal back deep in first-half stoppage time. Charalampos Kostoulas reacted fastest to a long ball and finished clinically to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half belonged to the visitors. They pressed higher and equalised in the 65th minute when Pascal Groß converted from close range after sustained pressure. Just four minutes later, substitute Maxim De Cuyper completed the turnaround, arriving perfectly to turn in a low cross and make it 3-2.
Late Pressure Fails
United introduced fresh attacking options and pushed for an equaliser, but Brighton managed the closing stages professionally and held on for a famous away win, progressing to the fourth round.
What It Means
This is another damaging result for Carrick. United have now suffered consecutive home defeats and questions are growing about their ability to manage games and protect leads. For Lacey, however, the night offered a bright personal note on an otherwise disappointing evening for the club.
The result also ends United’s interest in one of the domestic cup competitions early once again.
