Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League over alleged financial breaches, according to a report by The Athletic.

An independent commission delivered the verdict following a lengthy investigation into the club’s finances between 2009 and 2018. One charge was dismissed. The Premier League formally charged the club in February 2023 after a multi-year probe into alleged breaches of its financial regulations across nine seasons. The allegations centred on the provision of accurate financial information and related financial dealings.

City have consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintained that they did not breach Premier League rules. A club spokesperson told The Athletic that the process remains incomplete:

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.

“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

The club is expected to appeal the commission’s decision, The Athletic reported. Sanctions have not yet been determined. The next stage of the process will address the consequences of the findings, and any punishment could itself be subject to appeal.

This case ranks among the most extensive disciplinary proceedings in Premier League history.

It covers a period during which Manchester City established themselves as one of the dominant clubs in English football, winning multiple Premier League titles and other major trophies. The verdict itself does not automatically trigger immediate penalties; those will be decided separately.

The Athletic’s reporting indicates the process continues, with the focus now shifting to potential sanctions. Manchester City continue to contest the allegations.
