George Kamurasi, a goalkeeper for the London-based non-league team SE Dons, has been selected as the next king of the Tooro people in Uganda.
At 36, Kamurasi plays in England's ninth-tier league and was chosen by a committee to succeed his late cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
King Oyo, who was 34, died while being treated for cancer, leaving the Tooro Kingdom in a transitional period.
Known as “Big G,” Kamurasi is a British national and serves as captain of SE Dons in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division in southeast London.
He is known at his club for his energetic and commanding presence, with video clips showing his passionate team talks.
Although selected as the future monarch, Kamurasi is hesitant about leaving London, where he lives with his wife and son, to take on the royal role in Uganda.
His appointment has caused mixed reactions in Uganda—some appreciate his candid personality, while others doubt if someone raised in the UK can truly represent the Tooro people.
The funeral for King Oyo, who became king at just three years old in 1995, is scheduled for this weekend.
Kamurasi comes from a notable royal family; his grandfather, King George Rukidi III, was known for hosting Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 visit to Uganda.
In an unexpected twist, Kamurasi might miss the funeral due to a scheduling conflict with a football match involving his club.
SE Dons play in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, which is at Level 9 of English football.
Now, Kamurasi faces a major choice: continue his life and football career in London or embrace his family’s royal responsibilities in Uganda.
