Growing Closer to Jehovah One Day at a Time

Have you ever stopped in the middle of a busy day and realized how little you still understand about the One who made everything? I have. Even after years of reading the Bible and trying to live by its principles, there are moments when Jehovah feels both near and mysterious at the same time. That tension is actually a good thing. It keeps us reaching.

The Bible never presents knowing God as a one-time achievement. Instead, it invites us into an ongoing relationship. King David once told his son, “Know the God of your father and serve him with a complete heart” (1 Chronicles 28:9). Notice he didn’t say “learn a few facts about Him.” He spoke of knowing Him in a way that reaches the heart.

Knowing Jehovah Is More Than Collecting Information

Many of us can list God’s qualities—love, justice, wisdom, power. We can quote verses that describe them. Yet real knowledge goes deeper. It changes how we feel about Him and how we respond to Him.

Think about the difference between reading a biography of a kind person and actually becoming friends with that person. Facts are useful, but friendship requires time, attention, and shared experiences. The same is true with Jehovah. When we begin to see how His qualities show up in everyday situations—how patient He has been with us, how He answers prayers in ways we didn’t expect, how His principles protect us—we move from knowing about Him to knowing Him.

This kind of knowledge produces trust. The apostle Paul, near the end of his life, could say with quiet confidence, “I know the One whom I have believed” (2 Timothy 1:12). His trust wasn’t theoretical. It had been tested and proven over decades.

Why We Need to Keep Getting to Know Him Better

It’s easy to settle. Once we feel we have a solid understanding of the basic teachings, we may start reading the Bible mainly for practical advice or to prepare for conversations with others. Those are good goals. But if we never pause to ask, “What does this passage show me about Jehovah’s heart?” we miss something vital.

Every time we notice a new facet of His personality, our friendship with Him grows warmer. We begin to make decisions with Him in mind the way a husband or wife naturally considers their spouse. We also become better at reflecting His qualities. The more clearly we see His mercy, the more merciful we become. The more we appreciate His fairness, the fairer we treat others.

In a world that constantly pulls our attention elsewhere, deliberately getting to know Jehovah better is one of the most stabilizing things we can do.

Practical Ways to Keep Learning About Him

Here are three simple habits that have helped me—and many others—continue growing:

1.  Read the Bible with one question in mind
Instead of only looking for what a chapter tells
us to do, also ask, “What does this reveal about Jehovah?” When you read about someone showing courage or kindness, consider how those qualities first exist in God. When you read about discipline or patience, notice how Jehovah balances both. This small shift turns every reading session into a chance to know Him more personally.

2.  Pay attention to creation with intention
You don’t need to live in the countryside. A single tree outside your window, the way rain falls, or the intricate design of a leaf can teach something if you slow down long enough to think. The apostle Paul wrote that God’s invisible qualities are clearly seen in what He has made (Romans 1:20). Taking a few quiet minutes to observe and then thank Jehovah for what you notice builds appreciation that facts alone cannot produce.

3.  Reflect on your own experiences
Keep a simple mental (or written) record of times Jehovah has helped you—big or small. When you look back, ask yourself what those moments taught you about His character. Was He timely? Gentle? Strong when you felt weak? Over time these personal evidences become some of the strongest reasons you trust Him.

We Will Never Reach the End

The beautiful reality is that we will never finish knowing Jehovah. Psalm 147:5 says His understanding is beyond measure. Even in the new world, with perfect minds and endless time, there will always be more to discover about our Father. That thought should fill us with anticipation rather than frustration.

So no matter how long you have been walking with Jehovah, keep searching. Keep asking questions. Keep noticing. Every step closer to Him is a step toward deeper peace, stronger faith, and greater joy. What is one thing you have learned about Jehovah recently that made you love Him more?
