Yeni Kuti, co-manager of the New Afrika Shrine, has described Felabration as an important platform that both celebrates the life and legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and actively promotes Nigerian culture to the world.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos ahead of the 2026 edition, Yeni Kuti outlined the week-long programme scheduled to run from October 12 to 18.

The festival will open with an art competition on October 1 at the Kalakuta Museum. A dance competition follows on October 3 at the New Afrika Shrine, while school debates are set for October 7.

The “Dress Fela” fashion show is planned for October 10, building anticipation for the main events.

Yeni Kuti noted that Felabration continues to draw international visitors, especially people of African descent from the diaspora, to the New Afrika Shrine. She described this as a positive development that creates a valuable opportunity to showcase Nigerian culture on a global stage.

“It’s a very positive thing because if you come to the Shrine, you see people from all over the world. I’m glad that we are doing it and we are promoting our culture,” she said.

Felabration was founded by Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti in 1998. Over the years it has grown into an annual celebration featuring music, debates, dance, art, and fashion in honour of Fela’s enduring legacy.

The festival remains one of the key cultural events that brings together local audiences and the African diaspora each year.
