Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has spoken about the quiet response from some former colleagues, friends, and associates during his ongoing legal challenges and detention. In a personal statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” he made clear that he harbors no resentment toward those who have chosen silence or distance.

El-Rufai explained that he has long supported individuals and causes he believed in, often at personal cost and in tough situations. These choices, he said, stemmed from his Islamic faith, northern Nigerian (Arewa) values, personal principles, and conscience—not from any expectation of later praise, gratitude, or reciprocal support.

He noted that the people he once stood by are free to decide their own responses now that circumstances have shifted. Some may offer public backing, while others remain quiet or step back from earlier ties. “Their reasons are their own,” he stated, adding that he does not intend to judge them simply because their actions differ from what some observers (or even he) might have anticipated.

The former governor observed that hardship often reveals the true character of relationships. The difficult months of detention and legal proceedings, he indicated, may lead him to quietly reassess certain connections and the expectations placed on those who look up to public figures. He stressed that any such reassessment should not be seen as condemnation or blame.

El-Rufai expressed no regret for past support given when he believed it was right. He said he prefers to stay true to his guiding principles rather than let others’ choices alter them. On questions of perceived injustice, ingratitude, or harm, he stated he seeks neither revenge nor retribution, leaving ultimate judgment to Almighty Allah in this life and the next.

He concluded that individuals must live with their decisions, and history will form its own view. His priority remains peace with his conscience and with God.

El-Rufai has faced extended detention since around mid-February 2026 in connection with multiple investigations and court cases involving financial allegations and other charges. He has previously described aspects of the process as a form of political pressure. Proceedings continue in the courts, with further hearings scheduled in the coming weeks.
