EFCC Declares Former Pension Task Force Chairman Abdulrasheed Maina Wanted Over Alleged Receipt of Stolen Property

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a fresh wanted notice for Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina, the former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms.

In a public notice released on its official X account and signed by Head of Media and Publicity Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency stated that Maina, 61, from Biu in Borno State, is wanted in connection with an alleged case of receiving stolen property.

The notice reads in part: “The public is hereby notified that Abdularasheed Abdullahi Maina, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of receiving stolen property.”

The EFCC urged anyone with information on his location to contact its offices in Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt or Abuja. Information can also be sent to info@efcc.gov.ng, the nearest police station, or other security agencies.

The commission’s statement provided no additional details about the alleged stolen property or the date of the purported offence.

Background on Maina’s Previous Cases

Maina has a lengthy history with the EFCC linked to pension-related investigations. He was previously declared wanted after failing to appear for trial in a matter involving alleged fraud of about ₦2 billion connected to the pension reform programme. He was arrested in Niger Republic in 2019 and returned to Nigeria to face charges.

In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of money-laundering offences and sentenced him to eight years in prison. Court reports indicated the prosecution tied him to the handling of funds said to have come from unlawful activities. He was also ordered to make certain refunds.

The Nigerian Correctional Service later confirmed that Maina was released on 25 February 2025 after serving part of the sentence. Officials attributed the early release to good conduct and statutory remission provisions under applicable correctional rules. His sentence had been calculated from the date of his 2019 arrest.

This latest wanted notice appears to relate to a separate allegation of receiving stolen property. At the time of the announcement, the EFCC had not publicly elaborated further on the specific claims.
