The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Delta State Council on Friday shut down the state secretariat in Asaba to protest the death of a deputy director in the Ministry of Secondary Education.

The deceased, Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, reportedly died in hospital on Friday, a day after an alleged confrontation at the Prof. Chike Odozien Secretariat.

Workers locked the entrances to the complex, preventing normal official activities. They demanded a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death and assurances about the safety of civil servants at their workplaces.

Allegations have circulated that Adeda was assaulted during a confrontation involving the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Kingsley Ashibogwu. These claims have not been independently verified. The circumstances of the incident and Adeda’s death remain under investigation.

Speaking during the protest, Delta NLC Chairman Goodluck Ofobruku said workers were concerned about their safety. He indicated the union would engage the state government and that workers could return if satisfactory assurances were given, but would stay away if their concerns were not addressed.

The development disrupted government activities at the secretariat as organised labour pressed for answers and workplace safety guarantees.

Allegations of assault have not been independently established.
