Datti Baba-Ahmed Clarifies Out-of-Context Remarks About Peter Obi

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has stated that his recent comments about Peter Obi, his former boss, were taken out of context.

Baba-Ahmed clarified this after his remarks in an interview with journalist Seun Okinbaloye caused reactions among supporters of the 2023 Labour Party presidential ticket.

In the interview, Baba-Ahmed discussed his relationship with Obi and their political journey post-2023 election.

He argued that Obi should not be seen as someone who abandoned him, emphasizing the complexity of their political relationship.

“Even when Peter Obi leaves you, they say you left him. How fair is this?” Baba-Ahmed asked.

He also mentioned that Obi would remain appreciative of the support he provided during the 2023 presidential campaign.

“Peter Obi will remain grateful for how I stood by him in 2023,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

His comments sparked extensive online discussion, with some interpreting them as criticisms of Obi and his political track record.

However, Baba-Ahmed insisted that the reactions did not reflect the full context of his statements. He also commented on the 2027 presidential race, asserting that President Bola Tinubu does not yet have enough votes to win.

“Tinubu does not have the votes to win the 2027 election; Atiku doesn’t have anyone to declare him president,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed and Obi ran on the Labour Party ticket in the 2023 presidential election, finishing third behind candidates from the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.

This controversy emerges as political parties and opposition groups prepare for the 2027 elections.
